Essential Quantum Mechanics

Essential Quantum Mechanics
~
Gary Bowman

Review
`Very well written, clear and to the point, and just at the right level to fill the regrettable gap between the maths-free popular books on quantum mechanics and the full courses in most textbooks. ' Jeremy Butterfield, University of Cambridge

Product Description
Quantum mechanics - central not only to physics, but also to chemistry, materials science, and other fields - is notoriously abstract and difficult. Essential Quantum Mechanics is a uniquely concise and explanatory book that fills the gap between introductory and advanced courses, between popularizations and technical treatises.
By focusing on the fundamental structure, concepts, and methods of quantum mechanics, this introductory yet sophisticated work emphasizes both physical and mathematical understanding. A modern perspective is adopted throughout - the goal, in part, being to gain entry into the world of 'real' quantum mechanics, as used by practicing scientists.
With over 60 original problems, Essential Quantum Mechanics is suitable as either a text or a reference. It will be invaluable to physics students as well as chemists, electrical engineers, philosophers, and others whose work is impacted by quantum mechanics, or who simply wish to better understand this fascinating subjects.

Multivalued fields: In condensed matter, electromagnetism, and gravitation

Multivalued fields: In condensed matter, electromagnetism, and gravitation
~
Kleinert H.

This book lays the foundations of the theory of fluctuating multivalued fields with numerous applications. Most prominent among these are phenomena dominated by the statistical mechanics of line-like objects, such as the phase transitions in superfluids and superconductors as well as the melting process of crystals, and the electromagnetic potential as a multivalued field that can produce a condensate of magnetic monopoles. In addition, multivalued mappings play a crucial role in deriving the physical laws of matter coupled to gauge fields and gravity with torsion from the laws of free matter. Through careful analysis of each of these applications, the book thus provides students and researchers with supplementary reading material for graduate courses on phase transitions, quantum field theory, gravitational physics, and differential geometry.

Contents: Basics; Action Approach; Continuous Symmetries and Conservation Laws. Noether s Theorem; Multivalued Gauge Transformations in Magnetostatics; Multivalued Fields in Superfluids and Superconductors; Dynamics of Superfluids; Dynamics of Charged Superfluid and Superconductor; Relativistic Magnetic Monopoles and Electric Charge Confinement; Multivalued Mapping from Ideal Crystals to Crystals with Defects; Defect Melting; Relativistic Mechanics in Curvilinear Coordinates; Torsion and Curvature from Defects; Curvature and Torsion from Embedding; Multivalued Mapping Principle; Field Equations of Gravitation; Minimally Coupled Fields of Integer Spin; Particles with Half-Integer Spin; Covariant Conservation Law; Gravitation of Spinning Matter as a Gauge Theory; Evanescent Properties of Torsion in Gravity; Teleparallel Theory of Gravitation; Emerging Gravity.

The Feynman integral and Feynman's operational calculus

The Feynman integral and Feynman's operational calculus
~
Johnson G.W., M.L.Lapidus.

Review

"A most scholarly text which is comprehensive, detailed and very clearly written. It embraces the whole of the topic not just one part of it, and the historical references give an insight into the development of the ideas behind this fascinating approach to quantum theory. Written by experts who are also good teachers."--Aslib Book Guide
"The idea behind the Feynman path integral goes back to a paper by P. A. M. Dirac published in 1933 in Physikalische Zeitschrift der Sowjetunion. It formed the core of Richard Feynman's space-time approach to quantum mechanics and quantum electrodynamics. Although the path integral was not mathematically well defined, it was widely used in quantum field theory, statistical mechanics, and string theory. Recently, path integrals have been the heuristic guide to spectacular developments in pure mathematics. It was clear to Feynman that his 'path integral' was no integral in the ordinary sense of the word, and that what he called its 'summation over histories' did not involve a measure in the usual sense. ... The book by Johnson and Lapidus deals with various approaches to making the Feynman path integral into a mathematically meaningful object. ... I would recommend this book to serious students of the subject ..."--Physics Today

Product Description
The aim of this book is to make accessible to mathematicians, physicists and other scientists interested in quantum theory, the mathematically beautiful but difficult subjects of the Feynman integral and Feynman's operational calculus. Some advantages of the four approaches to the Feynman integral which are given detailed treatment in this book are the following: the existence of the Feynman integral is established for very general potentials in all four cases; under more restrictive but still broad conditions, three of these Feynman integrals agree with one another and with the unitary group from the usual approach to quantum dynamics; these same three Feynman integrals possess pleasant stability properties. Much of the material covered here was previously only in the research literature, and the book also contains some new results. The background material in mathematics and physics that motivates the study of the Feynman integral and Feynman's operational calculus is discussed and detailed proofs are provided for the central results.

The anomalous magnetic moment of the muon

The anomalous magnetic moment of the muon
~
Jegerlehner F.

Product Description

This book reviews the present state of knowledge of the anomalous magnetic moment a=(g-2)/2 of the muon. The muon anomalous magnetic moment amy is one of the most precisely measured quantities in elementary particle physics and provides one of the most stringent tests of relativistic quantum field theory as a fundamental theoretical framework. It allows for an extremely precise check of the standard model of elementary particles and of its limitations. Recent experiments at the Brookhaven National Laboratory now reach the unbelievable precision of 0.5 parts per million, improving the accuracy of previous g-2 experiments at CERN by a factor of 14. A major part of the book is devoted to the theory of the anomalous magnetic moment and to estimates of the theoretical uncertainties. Quantum electrodynamics and electroweak and hadronic effects are reviewed. Since non-perturbative hadronic effects play a key role for the precision test, their evaluation is described in detail. After the overview of theory, the experimental achievements are surveyed, and comparisons with theory are discussed. Possible explanations for the observed deviation are presented. Perspectives for future improvements of the theoretical and experimental precision are considered. This reference text for researchers in elementary particle physics requires some basic knowledge of relativistic quantum field theory and elementary particle theory.

Elementary particles

Elementary particles
~
Hughes I.S.

Product Description
This is the third edition of a text that is already well established as one of the standard undergraduate books on the subject of elementary particle physics. Professor Hughes has updated the whole text in line with current particle nomenclature and has added material to cover important new developments. There is also a completely new major chapter on particle physics and cosmology, an exciting subject that has become an area of increasing importance in recent years. In this field much can be learned from the way the subject has developed, and so, where this helps its understanding, a historical treatment is used. Unlike other texts on this subject, at all stages the author closely links theoretical developments to the relevant experimental measurements, providing a sound foundation to what might otherwise be a rather abstract subject. He also provides historical background where it will aid comprehension of the material.

Pierre Deligne (Author, Editor), David Kazhdan (Editor), Pavel Etingof (Editor), John W. Morgan (Editor), Daniel S. Freed (Editor), David R. Morrison (Editor), Lisa C. Jeffrey (Editor), Edward Witten (Editor)

Review
'it is a concise introduction to the quantum field theory and perturbative string theory, with as much emphasis on a mathematically satisfying exposition and clarity as possible... This book will be helpful to all mathematicians and mathematical physicits who wish to learn anbout the beautiful subjet of quantum field theory, EMS --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

Product Description
Ideas from quantum field theory and string theory have had considerable impact on mathematics over the past 20 years. Advances in many different areas have been inspired by insights from physics. In 1996-97 the Institute for Advanced Study (Princeton, NJ) organized a special year-long program designed to teach mathematicians the basic physical ideas which underlie the mathematical applications. The purpose is eloquently stated in a letter written by Robert MacPherson: ``The goal is to create and convey an understanding, in terms congenial to mathematicians, of some fundamental notions of physics ... [and to] develop the sort of intuition common among physicists for those who are used to thought processes stemming from geometry and algebra.'' These volumes are a written record of the program. They contain notes from several long and many short courses covering various aspects of quantum field theory and perturbative string theory. The courses were given by leading physicists and the notes were written either by the speakers or by mathematicians who participated in the program. The book also includes problems and solutions worked out by the editors and other leading participants. Interspersed are mathematical texts with background material and commentary on some topics covered in the lectures. These two volumes present the first truly comprehensive introduction to this field aimed at a mathematics audience. They offer a unique opportunity for mathematicians and mathematical physicists to learn about the beautiful and difficult subjects of quantum field theory and string theory.

Mesons and Baryons: Systematization and Methods of Analysis

Mesons and Baryons: Systematization and Methods of Analysis
~
Anisovich A.V., et al.

Product Description
This book is devoted to the investigation of the strongly interacting hadrons -- to a quark model operating with effective color particles, constituent quarks, massive effective gluons and diquarks. The study of strong interactions based on effective constituent particles requires a solid ground of experimental data, which we now have at our disposal with the serious progress made in the investigation of hadrons, especially meson states.

The present understanding of QCD applied to strong interactions can be distorted by prejudices. Therefore, the way followed by the quark model is to rely on the experiment and to restore the effective Hamiltonian on the basis of QCD on the one hand, and, on the other, of the spectral integral method.

Baryon baryon and antibaryon baryon interactions are studied with the purpose of unambiguous applications of the written formulae to the interpretation of experimental data -- to the observation of new meson and baryon resonances. The technique used is the spin-orbital momentum expansion of the amplitude. This method is our basic approach to the proper treatment of experimental data. The photon-induced reactions are also considered and the problem of form factors is discussed.

Contents: Introduction: Hadrons as Systems of Constituent Quarks; Systematics of Mesons and Baryons; Elements of the Scattering Theory; Baryon Baryon and Baryon Antibaryon Systems; Baryons in the N and N Collisions; Multiparticle Production Processes; Photon Induced Hadron Production, Meson Form Factors and Quark Model; Spectral Integral Equation; Outlook.
