Compact Handbook of Computational Biology

Compact Handbook of Computational Biology
~
Andrzej K. Konopka (Editor), M. James C. Crabbe (Editor)

Product Description
Computer-assisted methods play an increasingly important role in today’s biological research. This interdisciplinary handbook is an authoritative resource that describes foundational concepts and pivotal techniques of biomolecular sequence analysis, biopolymer structure prediction, genomics, and molecular evolution. It contains 10 in-depth chapters and 2 appendices written by a dynamic team of highly regarded and experienced scientists, many of whom have pioneered current methodologies in computer-assisted research in the life sciences.

Compact Handbook of Computational Biology provides detailed coverage of

• pragmatic analysis of nucleic acid and protein sequences and structures
• definition and detection of motifs in nucleic acid and protein sequences
• protein structure prediction
• discrete models of biopolymers
• computer-assisted research on protein folding
• computer-assisted studies of DNA–protein interactions
• computer-assisted genomics, proteomics and comparative genomics
• computer-assisted studies of genome evolution at the molecular (DNA) level

The handbook is designed as a reliable, integrated reference for specialists, as well as an instructional manual for students and trainees in computational biology, bioinformatics, proteomics, molecular genetics (sometimes referred to as functional genomics), and related fields. It can also serve as a practical resource for industrial executives in charge of bioinformatics, genomics, and proteomics, as well as for science administrators in universities and scientific foundations. Lawyers, journalists, historians of science, forensic scientists, and medical professionals can also find this text useful as a desk reference and as a guide to the literature.

About the Author
ANDRZEJ K. KONOPKA and M. JAMES C. CRABBE are the editors of Computational Biology and Chemistry, one of the most prominent computational biology journals currently available. Professor Crabbe is Head of the School of Animal Science, University of Reading, United Kingdom, while Dr. Konopka serves as Scientific Director of the Center for Advanced Sequence Analysis, BioLingua Research, Inc., Gaithersburg, Maryland. Both editors are early pioneers of computer applications in the life sciences and have invented several methods of today’s computational biology.
